The Challenge
Deltas XP Migration initiative is a coordinated effort to upgrade 40,000 Delta-owned desktop and laptop workstations from the old Window NT or Windows 95 operating systems to the new Windows XP operating system. In some instances, the hardware must be replaced as well. This upgrade will improve operating efficiency and enable Delta Technology to provide new business applications and software upgrades more quickly. This change is a big step toward creating a computing environment at Delta and Delta Technology that supports the highest level of operational efficiency and optimizes the time to market for new software and hardware systems.
Solution
Migrating to a new operating system company-wide can be a traumatic and costly experience if it is not done properly. Our team of Configuration Management, Software Packaging, and Software Engineering experts made this a painless experience through tried and proved processes developed over years of working on many migration/desktop rollout projects.
Using and adhering to strict OS standards, we have packaged thousands of in-house applications and deployed them successfully across several enterprise levels. We have trained our clients in-house software engineers on our processes and procedures so future migrations can be handled with confidence and assurance of success.
Our propriety installation tools include:
ConflictSolver
Helps eliminate the typical pitfalls of installing several applications from different sources onto the same desktop by checking for potential conflicts before you deploy them into your production environment. This of course, can dramatically improve the stability of your desktop application environment, and eliminate the source of many application crashes.
Additionally ConflictSolver:
- Catalogs the files and registry settings contained in your applications, and intuitively resolve many conflicts that could affect proper application or operating system behavior. It is fully scaleable and can be integrated into existing rules.
- Catalogs and identifies and in some cases can automatically fix them.
- Allows for importing the MSIs and MSMs into the Database; MSMs first.
- Allowing you to select any or all of them for potential conflicts.
- Allows for groups within the database (helps with different suites).
- Can resolve during imports.
- Fully scaleable allowing for rules for special situations.
- Allows you to use transforms for resolution.
LauncherApplication
Often times a COTs application requires many configurations at run time. The typical Install Tool is poorly suited for this. Using Visual C++ our team created many of these custom launchers. This allows for seamless startup on the desktop.
DTDeploy
Configuration file for every application deployed giving additional detail to the Install engine as well as detailed logging and error controls.
XP Migration Process Flow
Result
Over 30,000 workstations were successfully upgraded and rolled out with the new operating system over an eight month period. The tools and utilities developed by our team afforded our client the benefit of employing a very aggressive deployment schedule due to the reliability of our software and the competence of our engineers.
While the new operating system and applications will be the most visible part of the change, a number of backend processes were developed which will have permanent benefits to our client.
- We implemented a new Reference Model of software and hardware components which will now ensure that all parts of the system work reliably and efficiently.
- New techniques and processes were developed to take advantage of XP functionality which has dramatically improved the packaging, testing, and distribution of software companywide.
Migrating to the XP operating system will reduce maintenance and support costs associated with outdated equipment and software, increase productivity, provide better service levels, and enable Delta to better communicate/work with outside parties. Additionally, the XP migration will enable Delta Technology to install and upgrade software more efficiently through a new remote process.
